Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health

Healthy cells, healthy hearts and energy balance

Cardiovascular and metabolic health RELIES ON complex, interrelated systems. Conditions arise when there are disruptions.

Cardiovascular and metabolic health

Cardiovascular and metabolic health conditions are caused by disruptions to normal metabolic processes that affect cellular function and the body’s ability to maintain a balance.

These changes at the cellular and tissue level then impair the normal operation of the heart, blood vessels and other organs. Despite advances in prevention, diagnosis and treatment, these conditions remain among the leading causes of illness and death worldwide. Given the impact of these conditions on human health and wellbeing, research is essential to better guide our understanding of why these disorder occur, how they impact health, and how we can prevent or mitigate their effects when present.

At Curtin Medical Research Institute, our researchers investigate a wide spectrum of cardiovascular and metabolic health conditions, including atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart failure, obesity, diabetes, disorders of iron metabolism and related metabolic disorders. Our work spans the spectrum of “bench to bedside” with the goal of improving prevention, early detection, treatment and long-term management of these conditions.
