Dr Jacinta Thorne

Research Fellow
Curtin Medical Research Institute

I have been a physiotherapist for over 25 years, specialising in musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy, and remain deeply passionate about helping people recover from injury and optimise their physical wellbeing. My work has always been driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s health and quality of life.
Through working with athletes affected by concussion, I witnessed firsthand the lasting impact these injuries can have on a person’s work, study, sport, and social life. This experience inspired me to pursue concussion research, a field far more complex and fascinating than I ever imagined.

About

Dr Jacinta Thorne is an experienced physiotherapist and researcher with over 25 years in musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy. Her research focuses on understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying concussion and the factors that influence recovery in both adults and children. During her PhD at Curtin University, Dr Thorne investigated how cerebral blood flow, cardiovascular changes, and exercise intolerance are linked to autonomic nervous system dysfunction following concussion.

As a postdoctoral researcher at Curtin University, Dr Thorne continues to explore how concussion affects health, performance, and daily life, aiming to improve rehabilitation strategies and long-term outcomes for individuals recovering from head injuries. Her work bridges clinical experience with scientific research to enhance understanding and care in concussion management.
