A/Prof Daniel Brown

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Sciences

Hearing and Balance Research Laboratory

"I was drawn to research inner ear disorders by the remarkable anatomical, physiological and mechanical complexity of the inner ear. Early in my career, this scientific curiosity evolved into a deep commitment to improving the lives of people affected by hearing and balance disorders. Today, my research is driven by a genuine desire to make a meaningful scientific impact and to contribute to better treatments and quality of life for those living with these challenging conditions."

Associate Professor Daniel Brown is a Hearing and Balance researcher with a particular focus on Meniere’s Disease. He completed his PhD at The University of Western Australia, followed by postdoctoral positions at Washington University in St Louis and the University of Sydney, before returning to Perth. He now serves as the Discipline Lead of Biomedical Sciences and Course Coordinator of the Bachelor of Human Biology at Curtin University.

He has been awarded more than $5 million in competitive research grants and has helped raise a further $5 million in donations to support Meniere’s Disease research in Australia. His ongoing work is driven by a passion to make a meaningful scientific impact and to enhance the quality of life for those living with these challenging conditions.
Dr Brown is recognised through awards including the Sydney Medical School Foundation Early Career Researcher Award, the ASOHNS Grace Kathleen Fanton Bequest, multiple Best Research Presentation awards and the Curtinnovation Award.

He is a member of the Association for Research into Otolaryngology, Prosper Meniere’s Society and Meniere’s Australia, and has contributed to the field through convening and hosting research forums and ongoing engagement with Meniere’s Australia.

He leads teaching in Human Biology and Human Biomedicine, and supervises HDR students.

His research focuses on peripheral hearing and balance physiology, with an emphasis on objective electrophysiological assessment and treatment monitoring in Meniere’s disease, using both experimental and clinical approaches.

Fields of Research: Neurosciences, Otorhinolaryngology, Sensory Systems.

Research Focus

Our research focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying peripheral hearing and balance disorders. The inner ear, comprising the cochlear and vestibular organs, contains delicate hair cells and complex epithelia responsible for detecting sound and motion with remarkable precision.

We combine human studies with animal research to investigate the causes of these disorders and to develop improved diagnostic tools and therapeutic approaches. A key aspect of our work is the creation and refinement of novel techniques to study the inner ear and its intricate functions.findings enhance our understanding of evolutionary genetics and the molecular basis of host–parasite interactions.
