Dr Pat Metharom

Technical Specialist

About

Dr Pat Metharom manages the Flow Cytometry Platform at the Curtin Medical Research Institute, where she helps researchers turn complex questions into clearer answers. She holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Queensland, and her path through science has taken her across France, Germany, Ireland, and Australia – an international journey that continues to shape how she thinks about collaboration and community in research.

dr Metharom has led grants and research programs spanning thrombosis and haemostasis, cancer, and neurodegeneration. More recently, she has moved into a specialised role in flow cytometry and shared research infrastructure, drawn to the opportunity to support the work of many rather than to pursue the questions of one. That role spans teaching, experimental design, and method development – practical classes and hands-on training, collaboration across platforms, and partnerships with international colleagues and industry that expand the platform's research capability.

As an Australasian Cytometry Councillor, co-chair of the Technician Commitment Taskforce, and a Research Integrity Advisor, Pat is passionate about advancing cytometry and research integrity education, championing the people who keep research infrastructure running, and building a more sustainable future for shared facilities across Australasia. She believes science is built at the bench, not just written on the page – and that recognition should follow the work, not the title.
