Brioni Moore

Associate Professor

Associate Professor Brioni Moore is a clinical researcher whose work aims to improve the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases in resource poor settings, with a particular focus on malaria and syphilis. Her research brings together expertise in pharmacology, clinical trials, and implementation science to optimise therapeutic strategies that are safe, effective, and accessible for mothers and infants worldwide. Her research is driven by a strong commitment to consumer engagement, capacity building, and equitable access to maternal healthcare innovations in low- and middle-income countries.

Research

Since 2012, Associate Professor Brioni Moore has secured $22.76 million in competitive research funding as Chief Investigator, including $1.72 million as CIA and $19.07 million as CIB–CIE.

Key funding highlights include:

NHMRC Clinical Trial and Cohort Study Grant (2025, $5.0M): An ultra-short course of primaquine for the radical cure of vivax malaria — Chief Investigator B and Country Lead (Papua New Guinea).
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Strategic Grant (2024, $4.47M): Single-dose penicillin treatment strategies for syphilis in pregnancy — CI and Country Lead (PNG).
Philanthropic Grant (Open Philanthropy/WHO, 2024, $595K): Cefixime to prevent congenital syphilis — Chief Investigator A.
Gates Foundation Women’s Health Innovation Grant (2024, $225K): Pharmacokinetics of primaquine in lactating women — Chief Investigator A.
NHMRC Project Grant (2017, $788K): Preventing postpartum and infant malaria using artemisinin combination therapy — Chief Investigator B.

Over the course of her career, she has attracted:

$377K as an Early Career Researcher (2012–2015)
$2.5M as a Senior Research Fellow (2016–2019)
$19.9M as Program Lead (2020–present)

Her research continues to integrate clinical pharmacology, global health, and translational science, with a strong focus on improving maternal and infant health outcomes through innovative, evidence-based drug therapies.

Research Focus

Brioni's research lies at the intersection of clinical pharmacology, infectious diseases (notably malaria, and more recently syphilis), and vulnerable populations (such as children, pregnant women, and people in low-resource settings). Her work emphasises the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of therapeutic agents, how these vary in special populations, and how to optimise treatment regimens accordingly.
